"Adam Silver: NBA Investigating Rise in 3-Point Field Goal Attempts"
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver acknowledges that the league may have a concern with the abundance of 3-point shot attempts, but he is not prepared to relocate the 3-point line.
During a speech on Tuesday at the NBA Cup finals in Las Vegas, Silver addressed the high number of 3-point shots being taken. Long-range shots are being attempted at a record pace, with the reigning champions Boston Celtics on track to set a new team record of 51.1 3-point attempts per game.
Silver stated, \"In regards to the NBA's evaluations of gameplay, I would not reduce it to simply a 3-point shooting issue. We take a more comprehensive look at the skill level on the court, the variety of offensive strategies, and the reception of the game by fans, among other factors."
\"I believe the game is in a fantastic place. I thoroughly enjoy watching the games, and I believe we have some of the most talented athletes in the world competing - it would be unfair to categorize them as solely 3-point shooters, mid-range shooters, or big men playing under the basket. It is an incredible sport."
\"With that being said, we are constantly discussing potential ways to enhance the style of play on the court."
In regards to the 3-point distance - currently 23 feet, 9 inches above the key and 22 feet in the corners - Silver stated, \"In the past, we have adjusted the 3-point line at times. However, I do not believe that is the solution in this situation. When we examine both the game and the data, I do not think it would result in more mid-range jumpers, if that is what people desire, but rather more congestion under the basket."
\"There may be some adjustments that we should consider, and my opinion is that we should take the idea of diversifying offensive strategies seriously. I watch just as many games as all of you do, and I have noticed that it is not necessarily a 3-point issue, but rather that some offenses are starting to look very similar and teams are copying each other. This is something we should pay attention to."
In regards to other matters, Silver commented on the league's declining television ratings, stating, \"We are reaching a point where people are watching more streaming content than traditional television. This is why, for our new television deals that we will be entering into next year, every game will be available on a streaming service."
Silver also mentioned that the NBA is not committed to permanently holding the NBA Cup semi-finals and final in Las Vegas. In the future, the games may be held in home markets, but there may be issues with arena availability, he acknowledged.
