Rickey Henderson, a 10-time All-Star and the record holder for most stolen bases, passed away on Friday following a battle with pneumonia, according to multiple sources. He was 65 years old.
Henderson spent 25 seasons in the major leagues, stealing over 100 bases three times, including a record-breaking 130 steals in 1982 to surpass Lou Brock's modern-day single season record. He ended his career with an impressive 1,406 steals, breaking Brock's all-time record of 938.
Aside from his incredible base-stealing abilities, Henderson also hit 297 home runs and drove in 1,115 runs. He holds the major league record for most leadoff home runs with 81.
Born in Oakland, California, Henderson was drafted by his hometown Athletics in the fourth round of the 1976 draft. He made his major league debut in 1979 and earned his first All-Star selection in 1980.
After being traded to the New York Yankees in 1995, Henderson returned to the A's in 1989 and also played for the San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Anaheim Angels, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
In 2009, Henderson was inducted into the Hall of Fame. He won World Series titles with the A's in 1989 and the Blue Jays in 1993, and was named the American League Championship Series MVP in 1989. He also received a Gold Glove Award in 1981.
