"Padres offer contract extension to manager Mike Shildt following successful playoff season"
The San Diego Padres have given manager Mike Shildt a two-year extension until the end of the 2027 season, it was announced on Wednesday.
Shildt, aged 56, led the team to a 93-69 record and reached the National League Division Series in his first year.
This was an improvement of 11 wins compared to the 2023 season under previous manager Bob Melvin.
\"I am privileged to continue leading this team towards the goal of winning a World Series championship for San Diego, as envisioned by the late owner Peter Seidler,\" Shildt stated. \"Together with our players and coaching staff, we are dedicated to building on our success, serving our community and the City of San Diego, and delivering a winning team to our amazing and deserving fan base.\"
The Padres finished the season strong, with a record of 34-18 in August and September. They swept the Atlanta Braves in the wild-card series before losing in five games in the NLCS to eventual World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
\"As demonstrated by Mike this year, he has an unyielding determination to win and a unique set of skills that motivated our team to perform at a high level,\" said Padres president of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller. \"He has a genuine love for this team and the game of baseball, and I am delighted to continue working with Mike to bring a championship to the City of San Diego.\"
Shildt previously managed the St. Louis Cardinals from 2018-21, with a record of 252-199, and was named NL Manager of the Year in 2019.
