Southpaw Nestor Cortes is on course to rejoin the New York Yankees if they qualify for the World Series.

Cortes was placed on the 15-day disabled list on September 25th due to a flexor strain in his throwing elbow. He has not appeared in a game since September 18th.

The 29-year-old was set to pitch in a simulated game at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday before Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Guardians. The Yankees currently hold a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The World Series is set to begin on either October 22nd or 25th.

\"I believe he is a viable option,\" stated Yankees manager Aaron Boone regarding Cortes' potential return. \"I can't guarantee it, but the timeline suggests that if things go well, he could definitely be considered.\"

Cortes posted a record of 9-10 with a 3.77 earned run average in 31 games (30 starts) this season, recording 162 strikeouts in 174 1/3 innings.

\"He still has a few hurdles to overcome and he needs to continue to feel good and recover well,\" Boone added. \"But his progress thus far has been promising.\"
