"National Team Inks One-Year Contract with Right-Handed Pitcher Michael Soroka"
The Washington Nationals reached an agreement with former All-Star right-hander Michael Soroka on Thursday for a one-year contract.
The financial details were not disclosed by the team, but according to multiple reports, the deal is valued at $9 million.
Soroka, who is 27 years old, will be joining his third team after sitting out the 2021 and 2022 seasons due to multiple Achilles injuries.
In 2019, Soroka had a promising season and was selected to the All-Star Game. However, on August 3, 2020, he tore his Achilles tendon and did not return to the majors until May 29, 2023, after facing several setbacks.
After spending most of his career with the Atlanta Braves, Soroka joined the Chicago White Sox in 2024. During his time with the team, he had a record of 0-10 and an ERA of 4.74 in 25 appearances (nine starts). Unfortunately, the White Sox went on to break MLB's single-season loss record (121).
Soroka's career in the major leagues includes a record of 17-18, an ERA of 3.67, 284 strikeouts, and 111 walks in 69 games (52 starts). In his standout season in 2019, he finished with a record of 13-4 and a career-low ERA of 2.68, with 142 strikeouts and 41 walks in 174 2/3 innings.
