"Max Scherzer, Right-Handed Pitcher for the Blue Jays, Placed on 15-Day Injured List Due to Thumb Injury"
The Toronto Blue Jays put Max Scherzer on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday, following his short outing in his first game with the team on Saturday.
Scherzer, aged 40, gave up two solo home runs in the first inning and three hits overall before leaving the game against the Baltimore Orioles due to inflammation in his right thumb. The Blue Jays lost 9-5.
The three-time winner of the Cy Young Award signed a one-year contract worth $15.5 million with the Blue Jays in January. Last season, he had a record of 2-4 with an ERA of 3.95 while playing for the Texas Rangers. This was the lowest number of wins in Scherzer's career since his rookie year in 2008.
Throughout his career, Scherzer has a record of 216 wins and 112 losses with an ERA of 3.16. He is currently ranked second among active pitchers and 11th all-time with 3,408 strikeouts. He also ranks second among active pitchers in wins, innings pitched (2,881), and games started (458). His former teammate Justin Verlander leads in each of these categories.
Scherzer has won the Cy Young Award twice, once with the Detroit Tigers in 2013 and again with the Washington Nationals in 2016 and 2017. He has also won the World Series twice, once with the Nationals in 2019 and once with the Rangers in 2023.
On Sunday, the Blue Jays also called up left-hander Easton Lucas from Triple-A Buffalo. They also added Mason Fluharty to the roster and designated Richard Lovelady for assignment.
Lucas, aged 28, has a career record of 1-0 with an ERA of 9.82 in 14 relief appearances with the Athletics, Tigers, and Blue Jays.
Fluharty, aged 23, had an ERA of 1.29 in eight games during spring training. He has yet to make his debut in the major leagues.
Lovelady, aged 29, has a record of 0-1 with an ERA of 21.60 so far this season. In Saturday's game, he gave up four earned runs on two hits in just 1 2/3 innings.
