"Los Angeles Dodgers Shut Out Chicago Cubs, Maintain Unbeaten Record at Home in MLB Recap"
Right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto threw six scoreless innings and Tommy Edman smashed a three-run home run as the Los Angeles Dodgers stayed undefeated at home this season with a 3-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Friday.
Yamamoto (2-1) surrendered only two hits and struck out nine batters while beating the Cubs for the second time this year. Tanner Scott pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save as the Dodgers improved to 7-0 at home and earned their first shutout of the season.
Los Angeles' Freddie Freeman scored a run but went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in his return from the injured list. Shohei Ohtani finished 0-for-4 and struck out twice.
The Cubs were limited to just two hits as they lost back-to-back games for the first time since their first two games of the season against the Dodgers last month in Japan. Chicago starter Matthew Boyd (1-1) began with five scoreless innings before struggling in the sixth. He allowed three runs on four hits in six innings.
Reds 5, Pirates 3
Jeimer Candelario broke an 0-for-15 slump with a two-run home run and Cincinnati made two crucial defensive plays in a win over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.
Brady Singer (3-0) won his third consecutive start to open the season, allowing three runs on two hits in five innings. Taylor Rogers, Graham Ashcraft, and Emilio Pagan combined for four scoreless innings of relief, with Pagan pitching the ninth to earn his third save in as many chances.
The Pirates finally broke through in the fifth inning when Tommy Pham hit an RBI double into the left field corner and Adam Frazier followed with his first home run of the season. Bailey Falter (0-2) struggled with his command all night, walking five batters while giving up five runs in five innings.
Padres 8, Rockies 0
Nick Pivetta struck out 10 batters over seven scoreless innings and Jose Iglesias drove in two runs with two singles in a six-run fifth inning as the San Diego Padres shut out the visiting Colorado Rockies.
Pivetta (2-1) allowed just three hits and one walk. The Padres also got two hits and two RBIs from Elias Diaz.
German Marquez (0-2) matched Pivetta until faltering in the fifth inning. He gave up seven hits and six runs, five of them earned, in 4 2/3 innings.
Tigers 7, Twins 6
Dillon Dingler went 3-for-5 with an RBI, Zach McKinstry drove in two runs, and the Detroit Tigers held on for a win over the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis.
Trey Sweeney and Javier Baez each hit doubles and drove in a run for the Tigers, who won for the eighth time in 10 games. Reliever Will Vest (1-0) earned the win, and Tommy Kahnle allowed a run in the ninth inning but still picked up his second save.
Byron Buxton hit a home run, drove in two runs, and stole a base to lead the Twins. Ty France and Edouard Julien each had three hits. Jorge Alcala (0-2) gave up four runs out of the bullpen without recording an out.
Rays 6, Braves 3
Danny Jansen went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, and Taj Bradley pitched six strong innings as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the visiting Atlanta Braves.
Bradley (2-0) allowed just one run on five hits while striking out seven and walking two. Christopher Morel also went 3-for-4 with a home run for the Rays, who had lost six of their previous seven games.
Bryce Elder (0-1) pitched six innings and gave up five runs and nine hits. Marcell Ozuna and Ozzie Albies each hit home runs for Atlanta, which suffered its 10th loss in 13 games.
Nationals 7, Marlins 4
Nathaniel Lowe, who was scratched from the starting lineup due to an illness, entered the game in the eighth inning and hit a pinch-hit, three-run double to give the visiting Washington Nationals a win over the Miami Marlins.
