Headlines: Jays and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Reach $500 Million Deal for Contract Extension
The Toronto Blue Jays and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. have reached an agreement on a 14-year, $500 million contract extension, according to multiple media reports on Sunday.
This deal, which reportedly includes no deferred money, is currently the second-highest contract in present value in the MLB. It is only surpassed by Juan Soto's 15-year, $765 million deal that was finalized in December.
Guerrero, a four-time All-Star and the runner-up for MVP in 2021, was on track to become a free agent at the end of this season. By securing him now, Toronto avoids the risk of getting into a costly bidding war on the open market.
Throughout his career, the 26-year-old has accumulated 160 home runs, 511 RBIs, and a .287 batting average in 829 games. Last season, he recorded 30 home runs and 103 RBIs with an impressive .323/.396/.544 batting line.
In the first 10 games of this season, Guerrero has a .256 batting average with no home runs and four RBIs.
