The Red Sox welcomed back a familiar face on Friday as they acquired left-hander James Paxton from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

To complete the deal, the Red Sox traded minor league infielder Moises Bolivar to the Dodgers. In order to make room for Paxton, Boston also moved right-hander Bryan Mata to the 60-day injured list.

Paxton, who previously played for Boston in 2023, was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Monday. He had a record of 8-2 and an ERA of 4.43 in 18 starts with the Dodgers after signing a one-year, $7 million contract in the offseason.

The 35-year-old Paxton stepped up for the Dodgers while their rotation dealt with numerous injuries.

Over the course of 11 major league seasons, Paxton has a record of 72-40 and an ERA of 3.76 in 174 starts for the Seattle Mariners (2013-18, 2021), New York Yankees (2019-20), Red Sox, and Dodgers.

Bolivar, who is only 17 years old, has a batting average of .270 with three home runs and 19 RBIs in 31 games with the Dominican Summer League Red Sox.
