Boston's latest acquisition Alex Bregman not competing for third base position

Rafael Devers transformed the third base position into a hotly debated topic before Alex Bregman had a chance to back out of a perceived territorial dispute with the Boston Red Sox.

Devers confidently asserted on Monday that he sees himself as the third baseman, in response to questions about whether he would be willing to play elsewhere to make room for the newly signed Bregman.

\"I think everyone on this team believes in their abilities,\" Bregman stated on Tuesday. \"We all believe that if we work hard this season, we have a great chance of being a winning team. I can only speak for myself, but I'll play wherever is best for the team to win.\"

Bregman, a Gold Glove-winning third baseman with the Houston Astros, joined the Red Sox earlier this month without any consideration for which position he would play. His relationship with manager Alex Cora emphasized that they both have the team's best interests in mind, regardless of where the Red Sox decide to use their top nine players.

It's likely that top prospect Kristian Campbell will be part of the equation when Cora makes his starting lineup on Opening Day. The 22-year-old stated on Monday that he is exclusively training at second base. Ranked as the No. 7 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline, Campbell has also played in the outfield. He had an impressive season in 2024, hitting .330 with 20 home runs, 24 stolen bases, and 32 doubles in 115 games across three levels of the Red Sox farm system.

\"Everyone saw last year how talented of a player he is,\" Bregman said of Campbell, who primarily played second base during his freshman year at Georgia Tech.

Bregman and Devers, along with other teammates, had dinner at Cora's rental house on Monday night, putting to rest any rumors of tension between the two All-Stars. Cora also confirmed that there are no issues between the infielders, after watching Bregman give constructive feedback to Devers during their glove work on the practice field earlier that day.

\"I'm thrilled to be his teammate. He's a fantastic player. I believe everyone in this clubhouse is focused on winning,\" Bregman said. \"Whatever it takes to help the team win, that's all I'm concerned about. I'll play wherever A.C. (Alex Cora) tells me to play.\"

Campbell was selected 132nd overall by the Red Sox in 2023, as compensation for losing Xander Bogaerts to the Padres in free agency. Last year, he was named the top hitter in the minor leagues.
