Falcons' Jack Nelson: Out for Sunday
Nelson (calf) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Buccaneers, Tori McElhaney of the Falcons' official site reports.
Nelson missed the entire week of practice because of a calf injury, so it's no surprise he'll be sidelined for Atlanta's regular-season opener. With Storm Norton (ankle), Tyrone Wheatley (undisclosed) and Kaleb McGary (leg) all on injured reserve, Michael Jerrell is currently the only healthy reserve tackle on the Falcons' active roster.

Falcons' Storm Norton: Likely out 6-to-8 weeks
Norton (ankle) is expected to be sidelined six-to-eight weeks, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
Norton was placed on injured reserve last week and seems likely to miss more than the required four games to begin the regular season. He's recovering from surgery on the injured ankle. Norton's absence became more notable after the Falcons lost starting RT Kaleb McGary (leg) for the duration of the 2025 season. Veteran Elijah Wilkinson is expected to open the season at right tackle -- lefty Michael Penix's blind side -- for Atlanta, which represents a significant downgrade from McGary.

Falcons' Clark Phillips: Cleared to play
Phillips (ribs) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game versus Tampa Bay.
Phillips was limited in practice earlier in the week but has been cleared to play in the Week 1 opener. He appeared in 16 regular-season games last season, logging 35 tackles (27 solo), five pass breakups, including one interception, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He's expected to be the top backup cornerback on the outside behind starters A.J. Terrell and Mike Hughes.

Falcons' DeMarcco Hellams: Out for Week 1
Hellams (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's game versus Tampa Bay.
A seventh-round pick in 2023, Hellams appeared in 15 regular-season games as a rookie before missing all of 2024 with an ankle injury.

Falcons' Darnell Mooney: Game-time decision expected
Mooney (shoulder) is questionable for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay, with Atlanta coach Raheem Morris expecting the wideout to be a game-time decision, Tori McElhaney of the Falcons' official site reports.
A 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff is good news for Mooney's fantasy managers, allowing for replacements from 14 different NFL games if the wideout is listed as inactive Sunday morning. The Falcons would have a tougher time replacing him, likely looking to KhaDarel Hodge and/or Casey Washington alongside No. 1 receiver Drake London and slot man Ray-Ray McCloud. It's a high-volume role, at least in terms of playing time, with Mooney taking 92.3 percent of available snaps in his 16 regular-season games in 2024. He injured his shoulder on the first day of training camp this year, missing five weeks before returning to practice near the end of August. The Falcons listed Mooney as a limited participant Wednesday through Friday this week.

Falcons' Michael Penix: Well prepared for Week 1
Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson said Thursday that Penix, who did not suit up for any preseason action, is "ready to go" for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Buccaneers, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
Penix said, "I pride myself to make sure that each and every week I'm always ready come game day," though he acknowledged that "the biggest difference is the reps," or lack thereof, as he prepares for the fourth regular-season start of his NFL career. The presence of star playmakers Bijan Robinson and Drake London will assist Penix in his goal of hitting the ground running, and it's encouraging that Darnell Mooney (shoulder) has returned to practice in a limited capacity and seems to have a shot at playing Week 1. On the other hand, Atlanta's offensive line had looked like one of the team's major strengths the entire offseason, but with Kaleb McGary (leg) now done for the year and swing backup Storm Norton (ankle) out 6-to-8 weeks, third-stringer Elijah Wilkinson is expected to start at right tackle. The lack of reliable blindside protection will be a notable hurdle for the southpaw signal-caller to overcome Sunday and throughout the 2025 campaign.

Falcons' Clark Phillips: Remains limited Thursday
Phillips (ribs) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com reports.
Phillips has opened the week with back-to-back limited practice sessions while working through a rib injury. His activity level during Friday's practice will determine whether he has an injury tag heading into Sunday's regular-season opener against Tampa Bay. Clark played in 16 regular-season games (two starts) in 2024 and finished with 35 tackles (27 solo), five pass defenses (one interception), two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Falcons' Darnell Mooney: Iffy for season opener
Mooney (shoulder) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
After having his reps capped for the second practice in a row to kick off Week 1 prep, Mooney told Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com that he would likely be a "game-time decision" for Sunday's tilt with the Buccaneers. Unless he can upgrade to full participation in Friday's session, Mooney appears set to take a questionable tag into the weekend, and official word on his status may not arrive until the Falcons release their inactive list 90 minutes prior to the 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff. If Atlanta elects to hold Mooney out for the season opener, more reps at receiver would be available for the likes of Ray-Ray McCloud and KhaDarel Hodge.
