Top Diamondbacks News

  • Diamondbacks' Anthony DeSclafani: Nearing return from IL

DeSclafani (thumb) threw 30 pitches during Friday's bullpen session, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

DeSclafani has been on the shelf since mid-August due to right thumb inflammation. He was cleared to face live hitters Tuesday, and the veteran right-hander is poised to return to the Diamondbacks' rotation barring any setbacks. DeSclafani has a 4.36 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB across 33 major-league innings this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Andrew Hoffmann: Dealing with elbow discomfort

Hoffmann was pulled from his outing with Triple-A Reno on Thursday due to posterior elbow discomfort, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Hoffmann recorded only one out in Thursday's game and allowed five runs on four hits and one walk. He'll return to Arizona to undergo imaging on his right elbow to determine the severity of the injury. Hoffmann has spent most of the 2025 season in Triple-A but has appeared in 10 major-league games (seven for Arizona, three for Kansas City), posting a 6.55 ERA and 2.00 WHIP across 11 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Transferred to 60-day IL

The Diamondbacks transferred Smith (quadriceps) to the 60-day injured list Friday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Smith's season is over after suffering a strained quad earlier this week. The lefty-hitting outfielder and first baseman appeared in just 87 games this season, slashing .258/.362/.434 with eight home runs, 28 RBI, 17 runs scored, two stolen bases and a 41:92 BB:K across 288 trips to the plate.

  • Diamondbacks' Elvin Rodriguez: Claimed by Arizona

The Diamondbacks claimed Rodriguez off waivers from the Orioles on Friday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Rodriguez has been optioned to Triple-A Reno. The Orioles designated Rodriguez for assignment earlier in the week. He's appeared in seven games with the Brewers and Orioles this season, logging a 9.15 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB across 19.2 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake Woodford: Collects third save

Woodford walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his third save of the season in a 2-0 win over the Rangers.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo continues to mix and match at the back of his bullpen, as Andrew Saalfrank worked the eighth inning against the heart of the Texas order before Woodford handled the ninth. The 28-year-old right-hander still has two of the Diamondbacks' last three saves, with Taylor Rashi getting the other and all three of Woodford's saves have come since Aug. 23. His ratios don't make a compelling case for consistent high-leverage usage however, and over 20 innings since the beginning of August, Woodford's posted a 4.95 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Blanks Texas for 11th win

Gallen (11-13) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing four hits and a walk over six scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory over the Rangers. He struck out five.

The veteran righty continues a late-season turnaround, delivering his sixth quality start in seven trips to the mound since the beginning of August. Over that stretch, Gallen has a 4-1 record with a 2.20 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 33:10 K:BB through 41 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week in San Francisco.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Lawlar: Taking seat Wednesday

Lawlar is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Rangers.

Lawlar snapped a 0-for-36 hitless streak at the major-league level with a couple base knocks in Tuesday's win over the Rangers, but he finds himself absent from the lineup a day later. Blaze Alexander will occupy third base and bat sixth for the Diamondbacks.

  • Diamondbacks' Jorge Barrosa: Gets start in left field

Barrosa started in left field and went 1-for-3 with a run scored in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Rangers.

In the Diamondbacks' first game without primary left fielder Lourdes Gurriel (knee), the switch-hitting Barrosa drew the start against a left-hander (Jacob Latz). Going forward, left field could consist of Jake McCarthy against right-handers while Barrosa or Blaze Alexander take over against southpaws.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Another outfield start

Alexander started in center field and went 2-for-4 with an RBI and was caught stealing in Tuesday's 5-3 win over Texas.

Alexander started a second straight game in center field, both coming against left-handers. With the news that Lourdes Gurriel is done for the season with a torn ACL, there's a greater need for Alexander's right-handed bat in the outfield. He has experience in center field and replaced Gurriel in left field Monday.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Lawlar: Snaps hitless run

Lawlar went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Rangers.

A great weight was removed from Lawlar's shoulders when he doubled in the fifth inning. That hit snapped an 0-for-31 streak in the majors this season and 0-for-36 going back to his first cup of big-league coffee in 2023. He followed up with a sharp single in the seventh inning, attacking a 1-1 sinker over the plate. Lawlar did not see a two-strike count, which is something manager Torey Lovullo talked about after the game with Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. " I know he's trying to do everything right and perfect, take pitches, see pitches, drive up pitch counts and different things," Lovullo said. "I went to him before the day started. I said, 'Go early if you need to go early, get your swing synced up.'" With the hitless burden out of the way, Lawlar may be more relaxed and confident going forward.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Reaches 25-homer mark

Marte went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and a double in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Rangers.

Marte has opened September with two homers in as many games. His blast Tuesday was the decisive hit, giving the Diamondbacks their first lead of the game in the seventh inning. He's now reached the 25-homer mark for the fourth time in his career, including each of the last three years. The second baseman has added a .292/.391/.537 slash line, 64 RBI, 77 runs scored, 22 doubles and four stolen bases over 106 contests this season. He's been the designated hitter for Arizona in four of the last five games, but it looks like manager Torey Lovullo will commit to keeping Marte's bat in the lineup while balancing playing time for other infielders.

  • Diamondbacks' Taylor Rashi: Picks up two-inning save

Rashi allowed one run on three hits and struck out two without walking a batter over two innings to earn the save in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Rangers.

Rashi has collected a multi-inning save in both of his first two big-league appearances. Most of Arizona's high-leverage relievers had pitched in Monday's extra-inning loss, and Jalen Beeks was deployed in the seventh inning to relieve starter Nabil Crismatt, leaving Rashi to collect this save. It's unclear if his early success (one run allowed over five innings) will position the 29-year-old Rashi for more save chances, especially since he provides a multi-inning option out of the bullpen. However, anything is possible in the Diamondbacks' closer situation, which continues to operate as a large committee.

  • Diamondbacks' Nabil Crismatt: Secures quality start

Crismatt allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over 6.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Tuesday.

Crismatt has won his last three outings, and this one was his first quality start. The 30-year-old has stepped up effectively since entering Arizona's rotation in mid-August, delivering a 2.14 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB across 21 innings through four appearances (three starts). Crismatt is tentatively projected to make his next start at San Francisco next week, assuming Anthony DeSclafani (thumb) isn't activated from the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Connor Kaiser: Back in big leagues

The Diamondbacks recalled Kaiser from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old spent the past couple weeks with Reno but will join the Diamondbacks on Tuesday as Lourdes Gurriel (knee) lands on the injured list. Kaiser is likely to operate as a utility infielder while up in the majors.

  • Diamondbacks' Juan Burgos: Sent down to Triple-A

The Diamondbacks optioned Burgos (forearm) to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday.

Burgos was pulled from Monday's game after taking a comebacker off his right forearm in the ninth inning. X-rays on his forearm came back negative after the game, but he'll now head down to the minors and rehab his injury. Taylor Rashi was recalled from Reno to fill the open bullpen spot.
