Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Aiming to return for SEA series
2h agoBurleson (wrist) is slated to return from the 10-day injured list at some point during the Cardinals' three-game road series against the Mariners starting Monday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Burleson is rehabbing from right wrist inflammation that caused him to be placed on the 10-day IL in late August. He's increased his baseball activities over the past few days, and it appears the 26-year-old outfielder will not need a rehab assignment and join the Cardinals in Seattle early next week.

8h agoContreras' suspension for his actions in the Cardinals' Aug. 25 games versus the Pirates has been reduced from six games to four games and he will begin serving the suspension Friday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Contreras was tossed from the game after arguing about the strike zone and then tossed his bat in the direction of the home-plate umpire, striking hitting coach Brant Brown instead. He'll sit out the weekend series against the Giants and the first game of next week's series versus the Mariners before being reinstated Tuesday. With Contreras unavailable and Alec Burleson (wrist) on the 10-day injured list, the Cardinals don't have a traditional first baseman on the active roster. 6h agoOrtiz is slashing .340/.443/.515 with three home runs, seven steals, a 13.9 percent walk rate and a 23 percent strikeout rate in 28 games for High-A Peoria.
Ortiz, who has split time between third base and first base for Peoria, was promoted to the Midwest League on July 29 after slashing .285/.406/.446 with 10 home runs, 31 steals and a 27.5 percent strikeout rate in 77 games for Single-A Palm Beach. A 16th-round pick in 2024 out of community college, Ortiz is benefitting from a .444 BABIP at High-A, but he also has a 27 percent line drive rate and a 44.6 percent flyball rate, so his batted-ball profile is ideal. Despite his stolen base totals, the righty-hitting Ortiz is listed at 6-foot-1, 230 pounds and grades as a below-average runner, so it will need to be his bat that carries him.
-
Cam Devanney PIT 3B

7h agoThe Marlins will recall Acosta from Triple-A Jacksonville before Friday's contest against the Phillies, Craig Mish of FanDuel Sports Network Florida reports.

Smith's season is over after suffering a strained quad earlier this week. The lefty-hitting outfielder and first baseman appeared in just 87 games this season, slashing .258/.362/.434 with eight home runs, 28 RBI, 17 runs scored, two stolen bases and a 41:92 BB:K across 288 trips to the plate.

Shohei Ohtani LAD DH
Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Starting on mound Friday
5h agoOhtani will be the Dodgers' starting pitcher for Friday's game in Baltimore.
Ohtani had to be scratched from his last scheduled start on the bump due to illness, and manager Dave Roberts said Thursday that the 31-year-old would rejoin the rotation Monday versus the Rockies. However, he's been moved up to Friday instead. Ohtai will also be in his usual designated hitter and leadoff spots Friday. Tyler Glasnow had been slated to start Friday's series opener, but he'll presumably now take the ball Saturday instead.

Christian Yelich MIL DH
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Idle again Friday
5h agoYelich (back) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates.
Yelich's back flared up before Wednesday's game against Philadelphia, and he'll be out of the lineup Friday for a third straight game due to the issue. Expect Milwaukee to take it day by day with the 33-year-old outfielder, but considering Yelich's history of back injuries, the Brewers likely won't rush him back. Jake Bauers will fill the DH spot Friday while Isaac Collins, Jackson Chourio and Sal Frelick fill the outfield from left to right.

Kyle Manzardo CLE DH
Guardians' Kyle Manzardo: Powers up in loss
13h agoManzardo went 1-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run in Thursday's 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay. He was also hit by a pitch.
Jose Ramirez and Manzardo belted back-to-back home runs to lead off the ninth inning, but that's where the Guardians' comeback stalled. The homer was Manzardo's 25th of the season and fourth in the last seven games. Earlier in the year, the lefty-hitting Manzardo started against right-handers only, but now manager Stephen Vogt is using him against lefties, too. Manzardo started the last three times the Guardians faced a southpaw starter as the club still has postseason hopes.

Trevor Larnach MIN DH
Twins' Trevor Larnach: Posts three hits, steal in loss
18h agoLarnach went 3-for-5 with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Thursday's 11-8 loss to the White Sox.
Larnach's steal was his first since May 28 versus the Rays, and it was his first attempt since he was caught in a July 4. While he won't light things up on the basepaths, the 28-year-old has swung a hot bat lately. He is 13-for-24 (.542) over his last six games, logging five multi-hit efforts in that span. Overall, Larnach is up to a .258/.330/.415 slash line with 16 home runs, 56 RBI, 56 runs scored, three steals, 20 doubles and one triple over a career-high 125 games this season.

Yordan Alvarez HOU DH
Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Erupts for homer, four hits
20h agoAlvarez went 4-for-5 with a solo home run, a double, a second RBI and two total runs scored in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Yankees.
Alvarez has pummeled Yankees pitching over the last two games, going 8-for-10 with three extra-base hits and three RBI in that span. The slugger struggled to find his timing right after being activated from the injured list after a lengthy absence due to a hand injury, but he's bounced back quickly with four multi-hit efforts over his last five games. He's now batting .273 with an .811 OPS, five homers, 25 RBI, 14 runs scored and one stolen base across 158 plate appearances this season.
