Nebraska Spring Football Game at Risk Due to Portal Concerns

The head coach of Nebraska, Matt Rhule, suggests that he may cancel the traditional spring game for his team.

Although this decision may disappoint the devoted fans in Lincoln, Nebraska, Rhule believes it is necessary to maintain the unity of his program.

"I am not certain yet, but I must admit that I highly doubt it," Rhule stated to reporters on Saturday regarding the possibility of the Cornhuskers playing the game.

The main reason for this potential cancellation is the transfer portal. Rhule does not want to expose his players to other coaches who may try to recruit them during the spring transfer window.

"The term 'tampering' no longer exists," Rhule explained. "It is now an open market. I do not want to open our team up to the outside world. I do not want other coaches to watch our players and think, 'Wow, he is a great player. Let's try to get him.'"

Rhule is considering alternative ways to give fans a preview of the team before the season begins, without making his players available to other teams. Last year's spring game attracted 60,452 fans in Lincoln and was also televised on the Big Ten Network.

The spring transfer portal will close on April 25. After that, as a symbolic end to spring practices, Nebraska could potentially invite fans to watch.

"I do want to showcase our players in some way," Rhule expressed. "So what exactly will it be? ... Right now, my focus is on recruiting."
